Aikoku Koushinkyoku

Philippine Currency used by the Japanese during the Japanese occupation

During the Japanese Occupation of the Philippines, all citizens of the occupied territories were made to memorize the Aikoku Koshinkyoku, a Japanese patriotic song.  Out of fear or to gain favor many a Filipino Citizen memorized the song. Everyday, students and citizens alike would have to sing the Kimigayo or Japanese National Anthem followed by the Aikoku Koshinkyoku…

“Miyo toukai no sora akete kyokujitsu takaku kagayakeba
Tenchi no seiki hatsuratsu to kibou ha odoru ooyashima
Oo seirou no asagumo ni sobiyuru Fuji no sugata koso
Kinou muketsu yurugi naki waga nippon no hokori nare”

(Look, when the east sky is getting bright and the sun is shining in sky. Fresh natural spirit and wish the cheerfulness and happiness over our country. Oh, morning cloud in the bright sky and high-pitched Mount Fuji. That’s our proud to our Nippon which will never be shattered and quaked)

and finally the students will start their calisthenics “ichi, ni, san, shi, go, roko, sitchi, hachi,….”

Cagayan de Misamis was occupied by the Japanese from May 3 1942 to January 7 1945.
